Codes and Conventions of Advertising

Shock/Surprise and Sympathy - This is when the adverts shocks you, mainly making you feel sorry for people, mainly poor people or either animal, could be anything. It makes you emotional and suprized because you may not of known this information and may want to act upon it for example the 'Water aid' advert for poor people in Africa.

Annoyingness and Catchiness - This is when the advert has something annoying in it, it can either be a person or a theme tune or something very distinct, i have chosen 'Go compare' where the man is sining a very annoying song in a annoying voice/tone.

Celebrity Endorsement - This is when celebrities are used in adverts to make it more memorable and more effective for example everyone knows Beyonce, and she has recently done a 'Pepsi' advertisement, she is a big idol too many people so having here in this advertisement makes it memorable and make you want the product itself.

Music - This is when a particular song which is very well known and popular or either has a deep meaning behind it is used in an advert to make an impact on the audience. For exmaple the interenet exploer, windows advert when they use to song by 'alex clare - to close', it made the advert look even more interesting and made people download this song.

Catchy / Strong Message - This is when an advert really makes you think or makes something stick in your head and everytime you hear it, it makes you think about the advertisement for example McDonalds have the catchy slogan 'im loving it', when anyone hears that they wil instantly recognise it and think of McDonalds, this is increasing brand identity.

Aspiration - This is when they use goodlock people in the adverts, to make the audience want to be like them too for exmaple in the 'Lynx' adverts girls go crazy over the guy because he's wearing lynx, aspiration comes into this as all guys would think if he wears that product 'sexy, attractive' girls will approach him.

Humour - This is when an advert is really funny which would make an audience remember it for exmaple i have chosen the 'creme egg' when they all try to explode and get splattered everywhere, it is weird however funny so this would make it memorable.

Animal factor - This is when animals are used in the advert to either make it sympathetic or funnay, or scar, anything really, for example in the 'cravendale' milk advert the cats are after the hmans that drink cravendale becuase it tastes so good they hunt it downwhich makes it weird, scary and funny.

Nostalgia - Is when adverts remind of the younger days you had and take you back and make you remember your childhood or something to do with the past for example i have chosen is the snickers adverts back in the days when it use to be called marathon, and when people watch this they'll remember when it use to be called this and when they use to eat it.

Intertextuality - This is when the advert itself doesnt have anything to do with the product however it still relates in someway and it is still selling the product well for exmaple 'Guiness' always have adverts that are different however it all makes sence and relates back to the product at the end.
